Dananjaya earns shock Sri Lanka call-up
Sri Lanka have sprung a major surprise by selecting teenage spinner Akila Dananjaya in their squad for the World Twenty20.
The uncapped Dananjaya was not in his country's preliminary 30-man party; indeed, he had not even played professional cricket prior to the ongoing Sri Lanka Premier League.
However, after impressing skipper Mahela Jayawardene during a net session, the 18-year-old has now been fast-tracked into Sri Lanka’s national set-up.
Opening batsman Dilshan Munaweera is the other uncapped player to have been called up, while Ajantha Mendis is recalled after impressing on his return from a back injury.
Kumar Sangakkara and Nuwan Kulasekara have both been retained, despite their current injury troubles. Sangakkara is recovering from a fractured finger and Kulasekara has a groin problem.
The most notable absentees are batsmen Upul Tharanga, who played in the T20 against India earlier this month, and Chamara Kapugedara.
Sri Lanka squad: Mahela Jayawardene (captain), Angelo Mathews (vice-captain), Kumar Sangakkara, Tillakaratne Dilshan, Lahiru Thirimanne, Jeevan Mendis, Dilshan Munaweera, Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Kulasekara, Rangana Herath, Ajantha Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, Shaminda Eranga, Akila Dananjaya.
