Afghanistan secured a place in this year’s World Twenty20 courtesy of a 47-run victory over Namibia in the preliminary qualifying final at Dubai.

Nawroz Mangal’s side, who also featured in the 2010 event in the Caribbean, topped Group A with a 100% record and maintained their winning streak this afternoon by defeating the winners of Group B.

Namibia now face a match against Ireland or the Netherlands to determine the second qualifier, the latter two teams having maintained their hopes with respective victories over Canada and Scotland.

Afghanistan and their fellow qualifier will then do battle on Saturday to determine which group each team will be placed in. The winner will join Australia and West Indies in Group B, with the loser facing England and India in Group A.

Afghanistan’s success today owed much to a rapid opening partnership of 57 between Karim Sadiq and Javed Ahmadi, which laid the platform for a competitive score.

Sadiq’s 24-ball 28 proved the highest score in the innings as Namibia, for whom Christi Viljoen and Sarel Burger each picked up three wickets, struck at regular intervals thereafter to limit their opponents to 146 all out.

Dawlat Zadran then struck twice in his opening over and again in his second to leave Namibia reeling on 13 for three in reply.

They were subsequently dismissed for 99, with Burger and Nicholaas Scholtz the only men to pass 20.

Zadran finished with exceptional figures of 3-5 from 3.1 overs, the final wicket falling to a run out off his bowling, while Aftab Alam ran through Namibia’s tail to claim 4-25.
