Coach Adrian Birrell spoke after England U19s beat Sri Lanka at Scarborough

England Under-19s coach Adrian Birrell has backed his players to thrive in the future, claiming their ability to handle pressure will stand them in good stead.

Daniel Bell-Drummond scored a wonderful unbeaten 88 yesterday as the U19s recovered from 25 for three to successfully chase a victory target of 221 to win the second Test against Sri Lanka at Scarborough and earn a series draw.

Birrell suggested their experience of overcoming difficult circumstances will stand them in good stead for continued success.

“I am very pleased – in this Test we absorbed a lot of pressure and applied it back onto them,” he told ECBtv.

“The guys showed great character and pulled through. Character is important. The way these guys are going and the way Andy Flower has the Test side, without fight these guys have no chance.

“To play under pressure and be able to deliver is a great characteristic and one which obviously many of these guys have.”

Bell-Drummond was well backed up by Ateeq Javid during a fourth-wicket stand of 174.

Birrell paid tribute to both. "It was an outstanding partnership, phenomenal” he added. “They supported each other brilliantly throughout.

“Everything the opposition could throw at them they handled and it got us into a winning position.

"For Bell-Drummond to be not out in a win is brilliant for him. He can draw on that and in games in the future it will be invaluable.”
