EPD U19s come out on top
An Elite Player Development Under-19 XI bounced back from defeat a day earlier to see off Leicestershire second XI by three wickets with eight balls to spare, taking the best-of-three one-day contest 2-1.
Warwickshire’s Ateeq Javid and captain Joe Root, of Yorkshire, combined for a crucial 124-run sixth-wicket alliance to steer the youngsters towards their target of 200 at the National Cricket Performance Centre in Loughborough.
Opening bowler Harry Gurney’s three quick wickets left the U19s in deep trouble at 15 for four but Lancashire’s Luke Perry and Root began a recovery. Although Perry fell for 25, Root went on to make 67 and Javid 74 before both were run out with their goal in sight.
Earlier, Somerset’s Callum Haggett starred with the ball, claiming 4-43 to restrict help dismiss Leics in 47.4 overs. He was well supported by county team-mate Adam Dibble and Javid who each picked up two wickets.
The U19s now face consecutive games against Nottinghamshire seconds tomorrow and Friday.
