England Under-19s' tour of South Africa came to a chastening end as the hosts completed a 5-0 one-day international series triumph with a nine-wicket win at Newlands.

The Young Lions performed admirably in the Two Tests that preceded the limited-overs rubber and could consider themselves somewhat unfortunate to come away with a 1-1 draw.

But the 50-over matches have proven more to South Africa’s liking, never more so than in today’s game when England were well beaten.

Dominic Sibley

Dominic Sibley does his best to lead England Under-19s to a healthy total at Newlands. The opener compiled a battling 84, but South Africa still eased to victory in the fifth and final youth one-day international

Dominic Sibley and Ed Barnard shone with 84 and 53 respectively after the tourists had been inserted, but a total of 210 for eight was well within South Africa’s reach.

The Proteas duly eased home with more than 16 overs unused on the back of a 199-run opening stand between Clyde Fortuin and Murray Coetzee.

Coetzee finished unbeaten on 103 from 111 deliveries to earn the match award, but Fortuin - the man of the series - was cruelly dismissed one short of a century when Ryan Gibson pulled off a wonderful catch at midwicket off Josh Shaw.

Fortuin’s boundary-laden 79-ball knock offered a sharp contrast to England’s more laboured progress earlier in the day.

Tom Alsop and Kishen Velani fell for ducks in the first over and, although Sibley and Barnard did their best to turn things around with a gritty partnership of 136, South Africa were able to keep the run-rate in check.

Wickets tumbled in the closing overs to further dent England’s bid to post a competitive total.

Fortuin and Coetzee then took charge to guide their team to a comprehensive victory.
