Gregory and Foakes star in U19s win
Lewis Gregory and Ben Foakes starred as England Under-19s cruised to a morale-boosting seven-wicket victory in the final one-day international against their Sri Lanka counterparts.
England went into the last encounter of the five-match rubber already 3-0 down after the penultimate game was abandoned.
They were able to end the tour on a high, though, with Gregory setting up a comfortable win by claiming 4-22 as Sri Lanka were dismissed for just 141.
That left an easy run chase for England, underpinned by opener Foakes’ unbeaten 69 and Ateeq Javid’s 49 not out.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Sri Lanka made a disastrous start as opener Nimna Karunaratne was trapped leg before by Matthew Dunn from the second ball of the innings.
Niroshan Dickwella and Sandun Weerakkody looked to rebuild but, when the latter nicked behind from Dunn, a collapse ensued as the hosts slipped to 86 for eight.
Gregory was the chief destroyer, accounting for Dickwella, Lasith Abeyratne, Amila Aponso and Koshan Dhanushka, while Adam Ball chipped in with the wicket of Dilshan Dhanushka.
Angelo Jayasinghe, well supported by Akila Jayasundera, resisted impressively by bringing up his half-century.
But, when Tom Milnes dismissed Jayasundera, he was quickly running out of partners, eventually falling to Dunn for a 102-ball 53.
In reply, England made a disappointing start with Adam Rossington falling to Koshan Dhanushka for just one in the second over.
The visitors’ problems were compounded as Dhanushka removed Ramanpreet Singh, before Koshan got back in on the act by running out Sam Wood.
But Foakes and Javid came together, showing composure which belied their youth by putting on an unbroken 97-run stand to see England home with nearly 16 overs to spare.
The result rounds off a successful trip for the U19s, who also earned a creditable draw in the Test series.
