James Harris and the rest of the England Lions attack found wickets hard to come by on day one of their match against Barbados

England Lions were made to toil in the field on the first day of their West Indies Cricket Board championship match against Barbados.

The hosts reached stumps on 276 for two at the Kensington Oval, with Kirk Edwards unbeaten on 126 and skipper Ryan Hinds 80 not out.

Liam Plunkett and Jade Dernbach claimed the only wickets for the Lions, who opened their campaign with a convincing innings-and-120-run win over Leeward Islands earlier this week.

Plunkett, back with the Lions after playing in England’s final one-day international in Australia, gave the tourists an early boost when he had opener Dale Richards caught behind by Craig Kieswetter for just five.

A second-wicket stand of 95 between Kraigg Brathwaite and Edwards steadied the ship for Barbados, although the former departed seven runs short of a half-century as he was caught and bowled by Dernbach.

Edwards refused to be shifted and brought up his century in the evening session in the company of Hinds, who has featured in 15 Tests and 14 ODIs for West Indies.

The second new ball failed to bring any reward for the Lions and they will be keen to pick up early wickets on day two as they look to restrict Barbados to a manageable first-innings score.
