Jade Dernbach

Jade Dernbach completed a five-wicket haul as England Lions rallied to dismiss Barbados for 471 on day two at the Kensington Oval

Jade Dernbach returned figures of 5-84 as England Lions staged a courageous fightback on the second day of their match against Barbados in the West Indies Cricket Board championship.

The hosts resumed on 276 for two this morning and looked to be in an almost impregnable position when the third-wicket pair of Ryan Hinds and Kirk Edwards added a further 96 runs.

However, the Lions refused to throw in the towel and, after Dernbach had removed Hinds and Edwards, a flurry of wickets saw Barbados dismissed for 471.

England’s second string reached 101 for one in reply, with Adam Lyth and Andrew Gale closing in on half-centuries.

Hinds brought up his 12th first-class hundred this morning, while Edwards moved past 150 for the first time in his career.

Their 272-run partnership eventually came to an end when Hinds was bowled by Dernbach.

Edwards was then caught behind off the same bowler and Kevin Stoute added just seven before becoming Liam Plunkett’s second victim.

Dernbach duly completed his five-wicket haul and Hampshire spinner Danny Briggs also chipped in with three scalps as the Lions finished off the innings in clinical fashion.

Jimmy Adams departed for just 10 in reply, caught by Hinds off Pedro Collins, but Lyth and Gale stood firm and finished the day unbeaten on 48 and 37 respectively.
