Andrew Gale

Andrew Gale top-scored for England Lions with 110, but the loss of six wickets for 67 runs undermined a bright start in Port of Spain

England Lions were thankful for Andrew Gale’s century after a lower-order collapse cost them the initiative on the opening day of their top-of-the-table clash with Trinidad & Tobago.

Gale made 110 batting at number three as the Lions initially made best use of winning the toss at the Queen's Park Oval in Port of Spain, against the side who are level on points with them at the summit of the West Indies Cricket Board championship.

However, the tourists lost six wickets for 67 runs to slip from 244 for three to a close-of-play 311 for nine thanks in no small part to Shannon Gabriel’s three wickets.

The consistently excellent James Taylor followed up scores of 96 and 186 in the Lions’ first two matches with 66, captain James Hildreth having made 40. Both shared half-century stands with Gale.

Like Gabriel, Rayad Emrit ended the day with three wickets, including that of Gale, and the responsibility for extending the Lions innings tomorrow rests with Nathan Buck and Jade Dernbach.
