Nightwatchman Tony Palladino’s century preceded an attacking declaration from Derbyshire, who then troubled Australia A in their second innings at the County Ground.

Replying to the tourists’ 362 for four declared, Palladino today resumed with four of 57 for one and advanced to a first-class best 106 from 128 balls including 16 fours.

Usman Khawaja, playing against his countryman, hit 56 not out to lift the hosts to 269 for three when Wayne Madsen declared.

Nightwatchman Tony Palladino flayed 106 as Derbyshire made Australia A sweat and set up the prospect of a home victory tomorrow

Despite 78 from Steven Smith, Australia A slid to 141 for six at the close - a lead of 234 going into the last day of three in their opening tour match.

Palladino, whose previous best was 66, added 49 with opener Madsen until the latter fell to off-spinner Nathan Lyon for 34.

He then shared a stand 103 with Khawaja, reaching three figures with a four immediately followed by a quick single off Lyon before being bowled by seamer Jackson Bird.

Wes Durston, who made 37, had helped Khawaja put on an unbroken 69 when Madsen called them in.

Mark Footitt soon snared Michael Klinger and had Tim Paine, who was promoted to open after not batting in the first innings, caught behind while fellow seamer Palladino produced an inspired opening spell of 7-3-9-0.

Smith, batting at three in a revised order, defied the bowlers but lost Peter Forrest to Mark Turner.

Mitchell Johnson contributed 21 to an alliance of 72 until being bowled by David Wainwright. That was the first of three wickets in three overs with Smith falling to Dan Redfern and Wainwright accounting for George Bailey just prior to stumps.
