Dernbach delights in five-star show
Jade Dernbach expressed his satisfaction after boosting his international prospects with a five-wicket haul for England Lions against Sri Lanka at Derby.
The Surrey seamer returned 5-44 as the tourists were dismsissed for just 266 in reply to the Lions’ total of 493 for eight declared.
It remains to be seen whether the performance will be enough to secure Dernbach a place in England’s squad for the first npower Test.
That announcement will come on Sunday, but the South Africa-born paceman knows he could have done little more should he not be selected.
“It’s nice to put yourself on show, and coming out with five wickets has done my name no harm,” he said. “It was good to show people what I’m capable of.
“Obviously we are all trying to push our own cases forward to the selectors. We have four top-quality seamers (Dernbach has played alongside Ajmal Shahzad, Steven Finn and Graham Onions in this match) vying for one position.”
In the meantime, Dernbach and his fellow hopefuls can be pleased at having fulfilled a brief to inflict some damage on Sri Lankan confidence, with the first Test looming.
“Anything we can do to hamper their preparations is amazing,” he added.
“So if we can put them on the back foot leading up to that first Test it will be a job done for us.”
As for his own prospects, Dernbach appears well aware the path to international cricket may be a bit longer yet.
“I’m obviously just new on the scene, so all I can do is keep putting performances together and keep putting my name there.
“Other things are out of my hands. But I’m sure if I can keep putting performances on the pitch, those other things will take care of themselves.”
