Australia A assume control
Liam Davis and Ed Cowan put Australia A on course for victory on day two of their tour match at the Emirates Durham ICG.
The tourists’ opening pair shared 56 in 13 overs before bad light forced a premature stoppage at 5:25pm, putting their side on course to reach a target of 224 against Durham.
Australia A had earlier added 48 to their overnight score of 111 for six to trail by 38 on first innings.
However, Durham could only muster 185 in their second dig, despite a counter-attacking 62 from Ian Blackwell, as Nathan Coulter-Nile and Jon Holland shared six wickets.
Durham struck early this morning when Coulter-Nile was bowled by Mitchell Claydon, but Tim Paine - back after a year out through injury, contributed a valuable 40 with the aid of seven fours.
Paine then claimed three catches as the county side slipped to 49 for five.
From there, it was left to Blackwell to revive Durham - and stake his claim for an LV= County Championship recall - with a 63-ball innings containing six fours and three successive leg-side sixes off Starc.
By the time he holed out to deep midwicket off Holland, Australia A were facing a stiffer chase than they may have imagined, although Claydon was then taken for 22 in his first two overs as the diminutive Davis scored freely.
He was unbeaten on 38 off 42 balls at stumps, with skipper Cowan having progressed to 18.
