The England selectors have announced that Leicestershire’s Stuart Broad and Gloucestershire’s Jon Lewis have been called into the England A squad for this week’s tour match against Sri Lanka at Worcester.
They replace Hampshire’s Chris Tremlett, who has an ankle injury, and Sajid Mahmood, who has been withdrawn from the squad by the England selectors ahead of next week’s 1st npower Test at Lord’s.
Mahmood will now play for Lancashire in their Liverpool Victoria County Championship match against Kent starting on Wednesday.
Chairman of Selectors, David Graveney, said: ”Following the injuries to Simon Jones and James Anderson, the selectors have decided to withdraw Sajid Mahmood from the Sri Lanka tour match for tactical reasons as he is in contention to play in next week’s 1st Test.
“Liam Plunkett is also under consideration for the 1st Test but he will play for England A as Durham do not have a four-day game this week and this will provide him with further match practice.
“Jon Lewis and Stuart Broad have both shown fine early season form for their Counties and I am sure they will be keen to make the most of this opportunity against Sri Lanka.”
