England Lions seamer Graham Onions struck with his second ball to remove opener Jamie How as New Zealand began their reply to the Lions’ first-innings total of 280 at the Rose Bowl.
Chris Tremlett also claimed a wicket as the tourists reached 33 for two after an hour’s play on the second day.
Fellow seamer Matthew Hoggard had hoped to make an impression as the selectors consider their options for next week’s opening npower Test at Lord’s, with the squad due to be announced on Sunday morning by national selector Geoff Miller.
While he failed to make the breakthrough during an opening six-over burst for nine runs, Onions claimed a breakthrough as How was trapped lbw in his crease.
Onions continued to look the more threatening of the Lions’ attack with Hoggard eventually being replaced by Hampshire fast bowler Tremlett.
He struck in his fifth over with James Marshall, who had battled to 10 in 15 overs at the crease, steering a short delivery straight to Luke Wright at short leg.
