Bowlers on song in Lions win
Liam Plunkett and Danny Briggs took three wickets apiece as England Lions bowled out St Kitts & Nevis for 89 on day two of their opening tour match to claim victory on first-innings scores.
Having made 277 batting first, the touring side skittled their hosts for 89, with Plunkett returning figures of 3-31 and slow left-armer Briggs taking 3-17.
With Paul Collingwood’s spot available in England’s Test side next summer, Ravi Bopara gave the senior selectors a reminder that he can contribute wickets as well as runs, chipping in with 2-10 from six overs.
England opted to gain batting practice for the remainder of the match, and both Adam Lyth and Bopara passed fifty as they reached the close on 175 for two - a lead of 363.
Resuming on four without loss, openers Shane Jeffers and Powell added 18 more runs before the former’s wicket sparked a collapse that saw five wickets fall for just 13.
Plunkett and Bopara took two wickets apiece, whilst Ben Stokes ran out Tonito Willett.
Powell and Kejel Tyson led a mini-recovery before Briggs bowled the opener to pick up his first wicket.
Tyson was run out by Lyth and Briggs claimed the remaining two wickets to put the Lions firmly in control.
The tourists made a positive start to their second innings, but just as it looked like Lyth and Jimmy Adams would put on a formidable total for the opening wicket, the latter fell to Jason Campbell for 34.
Lyth anchored the innings with 72 not out from 148 deliveries and, although Bopara fell to the last ball of the day for 57, England will be delighted with their overall display.
