Jade Dernbach

Jade Dernbach accounted for Runako Morton en route to admirable figures of 4-44 as England Lions seized the advantage in Trinidad

England Lions demonstrated their resolve with the ball to help set up a victory push on the final day of their WICB championship clash with Trinidad & Tobago.

It could be argued that the hosts were in the ascendancy at the start of the third day, resuming on 173 for two in reply to the Lions’ 325 in Port of Spain.

However, Jade Dernbach was the central figure in a Lions recovery which saw T&T lose their last eight wickets for 93 runs en route to being bowled out for 283.

Dernbach was responsible for half of them, including top-scorer Runako Morton for 54, as he completed hugely impressive figures of 4-44 from 21.5 overs to add to his five-wicket haul in the drawn encounter with Barbados.

Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid and Danny Briggs shared the remaining six wickets in the innings.

They helped establish a first-innings lead of 42, which had been extended to 227 by the close of play thanks to half-centuries from Jimmy Adams and Andrew Gale in a second-innings total of 185 for four.

Adams and Adam Lyth put on 73 for the first wicket before the latter fell to Dave Mohammed’s chinamen, but Adams, who made 66, and Gale, who followed up his first-innings century with 55, added a further 74 for the second.

Although both perished to Imran Khan late in the day - two of three wickets to tumble, in addition to captain James Hildreth, for the addition of nine runs - the Lions could nonetheless be greatly satisfied with their day’s work.
