Woakes does the trick for Lions
Chris Woakes took a hat-trick en route to figures of 5-18 as England Lions made up for lost time by dismantling Guyana in their WICB regional championship match.
The first day of the four-day game was washed out and only 43.5 overs were possible on the second at Providence Stadium, but that was sufficient for the Lions to dismiss their hosts for a paltry 78.
Woakes accounted for Vishaul Singh, Veerasammy Permaul and Zaheer Mohamed with successive deliveries, and added Brandon Bess to a list of victims that also included opener Assad Fudaddin.
On another day, James Harris’ 3-21 return would have demanded greater attention, while Jade Dernbach continued his impressive tour to the tune of 2-26.
With all 10 wickets falling to pace, Guyana - without a win in four games this season - were bowled out inside 38 overs. Leon Johnson, who made 24, was one of only three players to reach double figures.
The Lions, who began the game third in the table, trailed Guyana by just 36 runs at the close as Craig Kieswetter and Adam Lyth hurried them to 42 without loss in the 6.1 overs possible.
