Hampshire spinner Danny Briggs claimed three wickets as England Lions restricted Windward Islands to 237 on the second day in Dominica

England Lions moved into a position of strength in their WICB regional four-day championship match against Windward Islands following an impressive bowling display on day two.

After adding 22 to their overnight score of 280 for eight, the Lions dismissed their opponents for 237, with all five bowlers claiming at least one wicket.

James Hildreth’s side reached the close on 20 for one, a lead of 85, with Jimmy Adams and nightwatchman James Harris at the crease in Dominica.

Windward Islands wasted little time in wrapping up the Lions’ first innings this morning. Mervin Matthew, who finished with 3-45, trapped Chris Woakes lbw for 37, and West Indies seamer Nelon Pascal accounted for last man Andy Carter.

Nottinghamshire seamer Carter, making his first appearance on tour after being called up to replace the injured Maurice Chambers, quickly made an impression with the ball as he removed openers Tyrone Theophile and Atticus Browne for 28 and 21 respectively.

Harris and Woakes struck to leave Windward Islands reeling on 82 for four, but a partnership of 79 between Kevin James and Dalton Polius left the game delicately poised.

It was Woakes who made the crucial breakthrough for the Lions, winning a leg before decision against James with the batsman one short of a half-century.

Polius added a further 44 for the sixth wicket with wicketkeeper-batsman Lyndon James, but spinners Briggs and Adil Rashid took centre stage thereafter as the final five wickets fell for just 32 runs.

Briggs finished with 3-51 from 15.1 overs, while Rashid emulated the feats of Carter and Woakes in claiming two scalps.

The Lions did suffer a setback at the start of their second innings as Kieswetter was caught behind off Pascal for nine, but they remain well placed to push for victory over the remaining two days.
