Briggs' best sends Lions top
Danny Briggs claimed career-best first-class figures of 6-45 as England Lions thrashed Windward Islands by 258 runs in Dominica to go top of the WICB regional four-day championship table.
The 19-year-old left-arm spinner, who had dismissed the hosts’ openers the previous evening, ran through the middle order before leg-spinner Adil Rashid matched his four wickets today in wrapping up the tail at Windsor Park.
Chasing 356 for an unlikely win, Windward Islands resumed on 10 for two but slumped to 97 all out in 43.1 overs today with only three batsmen making double figures. Number nine Mervin Matthew top-scored with 25.
Briggs’ final figures occupied 23 overs, six of which were maidens, and Rashid’s statistics were 14.4-7-19-4. Briggs now has 24 wickets in five competition appearances and Rashid 13 in four.
The result leaves the Lions nine points clear of second-placed Jamaica, the only team they have left to play but who are in a strong position to beat third-placed Trinidad & Tobago after three days of their penultimate game.
The Lions’ final match, which takes place at Sabina Park, begins on Thursday.
