Chris Woakes

Number eight Chris Woakes came in with England Lions 161 for six versus Jamaica and ushered them to 340 for nine with 104 not out

Chris Woakes’ unbeaten century from number eight aided an impressive England Lions recovery against Jamaica on day one of the Lions' final WICB regional four-day championship match.

The 22-year-old right-hander, who was 104 not out in a total of 340 for nine at stumps, arrived at the crease with the tourists teetering at 161 for six having chosen to bat first at Sabina Park.

That already represented a significant improvement on 103 for five when captain James Hildreth fell, with James Taylor and Ben Stokes sharing a half-century stand.

Woakes and Stokes, who made 63, matched that before the former ushered the tail to good effect as the Lions fought back in the second half of the day.

Hildreth’s side need victory to ensure they finish top of the table, although they cannot win the competition whose knockout stage is only open to the Caribbean sides.

The Lions made an uneasy start today, slipping to 41 for three when seamer Danza Hyatt bowled opener Jimmy Adams and number three Andrew Gale was run out - in successive deliveries.

Taylor and Stokes responded to Hildreth’s departure to opening bowler Jason Dawes for a fluent 40 with a 58-run alliance, which ended when Hyatt trapped the latter in front for 41.

Woakes, who struck 12 fours and three sixes, put on 71 with Stokes in a crucial seventh-wicket partnership. With the latter gone to off-spinner Tamar Lambert, Woakes advanced three figures shortly before the close.
