Lions suffer setback
England Lions remain winless on their tour of Australia after Shaun Marsh’s century earned the home A side a comfortable victory in the opening one-day international.
The Lions headed into the five-match series on the back of three defeats at the hands of Victoria in warm-up encounters.
They did not fare any better today despite Varun Chopra’s composed 105 ensuring a competitive total of 259 for six.
Ben Foakes aided that score with 56 at better than a run a ball, while James Vince and James Taylor chipped in with 24 and 28 respectively.
Marsh responded with aplomb, striking 100 before retiring hurt, and helped Australia A to a seven-wicket triumph.
Aaron Finch played the other significant hand, hitting a quick 80 before Alex Doolan added 39.
Vince and Taylor offered Chopra useful support, only for the former to be bowled by John Hastings and the latter to be ousted by Kane Richardson.
It was the arrival of Foakes that lifted the Lions, with the Essex man making boundary hitting look simple in a 42-delivery stay.
Chopra would eventually move on to a deserved century, yet it soon became clear that would prove in vain.
Marsh and Finch responded with a 179-run stand that took the game away from the tourists and, despite the former suffering a hamstring injury on 98, Australia A eased to victory.
