Jonny Bairstow takes great delight from Yorkshire's increased influence on the England team.

While only 22 overs were possible on the third day of the tour match against the New Zealanders at Grace Road, they were still dominated by White Rose stars.

Lions skipper Joe Root looked untroubled in taking his overnight 105 to 143 and found a willing ally in Bairstow after Trent Boult quickly ousted nightwatchman Chris Wright and James Taylor.

Bairstow was typically pugnacious in an unbeaten 45 - an innings many will hope is extended tomorrow given its fluent nature thus far.

His and Root’s efforts took the Lions to 315 for four, 30 runs ahead, and represented something of a warning to New Zealand's likely Test attack.

One of three Yorkshire players in England's squad for the first Investec Test, Jonny Bairstow said: "It stands us (Yorkshire) in good stead for the future."

Both Root and Bairstow were today named in England's 12-man squad for next week's opening Test of two at Lord's alongside fellow Yorkshireman Tim Bresnan.

"It's a huge tradition at Yorkshire that there have been a few players who have come through the ranks and played for England," said Bairstow after stumps had been drawn.

"It's the club's 150th year at the moment, so to have three guys that are in and around the first Test squad of the summer is a fantastic achievement.

"It stands us in good stead for the future to have young players coming through and playing for England at all levels."

An injury to Kevin Pietersen paves the way for the duo, who have played together since their early teens coming through the Yorkshire academy, to do likewise in a Test for the second time.

Yet the eventual return of Pietersen means they may at some point be vying for one place in the side.

Bairstow acknowledges competition is healthy, but never begrudges his friend runs given they are of benefit to him too.

"Growing up in professional sport, there is always going to be competition for places," he added.

"That is definitely healthy; he is scoring runs, I am scoring runs and everyone else in the country wants to score runs to push for places in the squads.

"But I am obviously delighted when he scores runs for Yorkshire and I was pleased to score the runs I did as well.

"It's obviously good that he is scoring runs for England and that I got some runs as well."

Returning to the home of cricket should bring back happy memories for Bairstow given he struck 95 and 54 against South Africa at the venue last year.

He said: "I have very fond memories in that game. It was pleasing to get runs against South Africa.

"But that was some time ago now and we have got to move on to this summer - and what an exciting summer it is ahead."
