Opener Stephen Moore hit a fluent 75 as England Lions drew their first tour match

England Lions’ batsmen could not all take advantage of time in the middle at the beginning of their trip to New Zealand as the tour match against New Zealand Cricket Emerging Players was drawn.

Opener Stephen Moore was the chief beneficiary, striking a fluent 75, after the hosts declared overnight on 321 for seven.

Moore’s innings, from 82 balls with 12 fours and a six, helped the tourists post 277 all out in 68.4 overs - after which the captains shook hands.

Ben Scott, a wicketkeeper playing as a batsman, was the only other Lion to reach a half-century with a patient 53 from 124 deliveries.

Batsmen Jonathan Trott, Samit Patel, Steven Davies and Luke Wright all fell for single figure scores.

Moore put on 59 for the first wicket with skipper Rob Key, both caught by Jeet Raval off paceman Te Ahu Davis who took three wickets.

Key’s dismissal sparked a mini-collapse which Eoin Morgan helped steady with 31. Gareth Batty (35) and Sajid Mahmood (29) chipped in down the order as the Lions added 114 for the last three wickets.

The sides meet again at Bert Sutcliffe Oval in Lincoln on Wednesday and Thursday ahead of the first Test against New Zealand A in Queenstown, which begins on Sunday.
