Root expresses pride in Lions

England Lions

Joe Root spoke to after leading England Lions to a 10 wicket victory over West Indies

Joe Root paid tribute to a “fantastic team effort” after leading England Lions to an ultimately comfortable 10-wicket win over West Indies in their tour game at Wantage Road.

Yorkshire batsman Root contributed 115 not out and received fine support from Michael Carberry, who compiled an unbeaten 72, as James Taylor’s side coasted to a target of 197 inside 49 overs on the final day of four.

The Lions victory was underpinned by a first-innings century from Taylor and solid displays from the frontline seam quartet of Jack Brooks, Jade Dernbach, Stuart Meaker and Matt Coles, who shared 19 wickets.

Reflecting on their success, Root told “The crucial parts of the game we took control of and we won those periods that really mattered.

I think (the game was won) on that first morning where we bowled extremely well and put them on the back foot to start with. The seamers bowled extremely well throughout the game and when it flattened out a bit yesterday they worked really hard again and kept the runs down to a minimum.

“We spent a lot of time in the field with an old ball and not great conditions, and we fielded fantastically well.

“That partnership between Jonny (Bairstow, who struck 50) and Titch (Taylor) as well, it could have gone belly-up there. It was just a fantastic team effort.”

While deflecting attention from his own impressive efforts, Root also reserved praise for opening partner Carberry.

“He’s great to talk to about the game. He’s obviously had a lot of experience himself,” added the 21-year-old.

“He was fantastic to bat with, he kept me calm and kept talking to me.”

Root and Carberry were barely troubled by a Windies attack shorn of Ravi Rampaul and Fidel Edwards for prolonged periods due to injury.

“We knew we had pretty much all day to bat on a pitch that had improved throughout the game,” said Root.

“It was quite nice to bat on once we got out there so we just played it ball by ball, played each ball on its merits and it got easier once we got in.

“It’s just very nice to get some runs at the end and see us home.

“It was a good experience and hopefully if I get another opportunity I can do as well as I did today.”
