Taylor values modest Notts scores

James Taylor’s runs for Nottinghamshire since his move from Leicestershire may not have been prolific, but he believes they have been “valuable” given the difficult early-season conditions for batsmen.

The 22-year-old right-hander joined Notts principally to boost his England prospects. Not only did that present Taylor with the challenge of Division One cricket, but also of playing half his games at Trent Bridge - renowned as the most seam-friendly ground on the county circuit.

Taylor made three figures in his first Notts match there, against Loughborough MCCU, before the LV= County Championship began. However, his highest score in 10 innings since is 46.

James Taylor told ecb.co.uk: “The wickets haven’t been ideal this season, not just at Trent Bridge but all over the country. So it’s been a test, but I’ve scored some valuable runs for the side."

Despite that, Taylor’s 225 championship runs at 28.12 have helped Notts to three wins from five and second place in the table, his best coming in last week’s defeat of defending champion Lancashire.

“Notts is a great place and Trent Bridge is a special place so (I’m) really enjoying it,” Taylor, who missed out on selection for the England Performance Squad, told ecb.co.uk.

“The wickets haven’t been ideal this season, not just at Trent Bridge but all over the country. So it’s been a test, but I’ve scored some valuable runs for the side.

“Even though they haven’t been big runs, they’ve been valuable. Hopefully that big score’s just round the corner.”

That would ideally be this week for England Lions, whom Taylor is leading against West Indies in a four-day game that began today.

A year on from captaining Leicestershire and the Lions for the first time, he is feeling more at ease with the role.

“I’m growing into it; I’m getting more confident,” he added. “I captained Leicestershire last season and I had a few games with the Lions captaining and then captained all winter.

“It’s been a busy winter being captain, but I’ve enjoyed every second of it and I’m definitely growing as a captain and getting more confident.”
