Varun Chopra’s 70 from the top of the order gave the England Performance Programme the chance of a first-innings lead over a DY Patil Academy XI after day two of three at Mumbai.

Once the hosts were dismissed for 277, Chopra led a strong reply that stood at 235 for seven thanks also to opening partner James Taylor’s 51.

Home captain Vinit Indulkar began the day with 69 of 219 for seven and extended his score by 25 before being last out to Danny Briggs. James Harris and Chris Wright, who respectively returned 3-51 and 2-33, took today’s other wickets.

Chopra and Taylor added 96 before Somerset duo Craig Kieswetter and Jos Buttler chipped in with 36 and 44. Vishal Dabolkar and Pankat Jaiswal both made three breakthroughs.
