Opening batsman Joe Root’s 166 dominated the England Performance Programme’s outstanding day with the bat versus a DY Patil Academy XI in Mumbai.

The Test squad member top-scored with 166 as the tourists closed day two of three on a commanding 484 for six in reply to 204. Ben Foakes was unbeaten on 90 from 94 deliveries and James Taylor earlier made 72.

Root began today with 40 of the EPP’s 70 for one and, by the end of his 211-ball innings, had hit 22 fours and a six. He added 104 with overnight partner Eoin Morgan, who scored 47, and 135 alongside Taylor.

Craig Kieswetter and Gary Ballance chipped in with 16 and 21 respectively before Foakes and Scott Borthwick, who ended with 35, put on an unbroken 116.
