David Parsons has vowed to carry on Peter Moores’ good work following his appointment as ECB performance director.
Parsons, the ECB’s spin-bowling coach, was confirmed as Moores’ permanent successor on Thursday, having filled the role on a caretaker basis since the summer.
Moores took charge of the England senior side in May following almost two years as National Academy director, and Parsons is keen to replicate that success in the newly-titled role.
“It seems to make sense to appoint from within because we’d got some momentum gathering with the Performance Programme,” Parsons told ecb.co.uk.
“Pete got things moving with the programme, and one of the strengths I will be able to bring is continuity.”
While Parsons, who is in India with the England Performance Squad, acknowledges the size of the task facing him, he revealed he has been able to call on Moores’ support during his time at the helm.
“We’ve got a wide remit - from supporting the England team right down to the age-group sides,” Parsons added.“I’ve got no illusions that it’s going to be a huge job, and I know I’ve got some rather large boots to fill after Pete’s time in charge and Rod Marsh before him.
“But to be fair to Pete he has not let go of anything we’ve done at Loughborough. He’s still involved in what we do, and he’s been there for me to pass on advice.”
Parsons has made “one or two changes” to the programme since taking charge, but he insists the structure created by Moores requires little in the way of improving.
“We’ve not made massive changes because Pete did an excellent job with it,” he added.
“The purposes of the Performance Programme have evolved a little over the last couple of years, so it’s a case of being aware of that.
“We’re there to provide support for the England players, and to identify and develop the best young players in the country.
“We must continue to do that, but we’re always looking at ways to improve things. Hopefully I’ll be able to do my bit.”
