Hampshire spinner Danny Briggs claimed 4-9 on debut as the England Performance Programme eased to a routine victory

Danny Briggs claimed outstanding figures of 4-9 and Craig Kieswetter smashed a rapid half-century as the England Performance Programme coasted to a six-wicket victory over Western Australia A in their latest tour game.

Briggs - making his EPP debut - was the pick of the bowlers as the home side were skittled for just 98 in 33.1 overs.

The EPP wasted little time in chasing down their meagre target, with the powerful Kieswetter scoring the team’s first 50 runs before falling for 51 off 30 deliveries.

Skipper James Hildreth finished unbeaten on 20 as the tourists recorded an emphatic win.

Chris Woakes did the bulk of the early damage in Western Australia A’s innings, the all-rounder picking up 3-23 in an impressive opening spell.

But it was the introduction of spin that sent the hosts into freefall, James Tredwell claiming 2-29 before Hampshire teenager Briggs ran through the tail in devastating fashion.

Opener Michael Swart top-scored for Western Australia A with 28 as only three other batsmen made it into double figures.

The EPP suffered an early setback in reply as Andrew Gale was run out following a mix-up with Kieswetter.

But the Somerset wicketkeeper-batsman made light of his partner’s departure, smashing four fours and three sixes in a blistering half-century.

Adam Lyth and James Taylor also fell after Kieswetter’s exit, but Hildreth and Ben Stokes guided the EPP home with more than 28 overs to spare.

ECB performance director David Parsons said: “This was an impressive bowling performance by the Performance Programme players which set up what proved to be a powerful win.

“Chris Woakes was particularly impressive and we were especially pleased to see Danny Briggs pick up four wickets in his first match of this tour to reinforce his reputation as a young player of clear potential.

“Craig Kieswetter’s domination and clean hitting reminded everyone of his capabilities at the top of the order.”
