England batsman Michael Vaughan continued his comeback from knee surgery with a 32-ball score of 14 for England’s National Academy side against Western Australian 2nd XI in South Perth, on Tuesday.

England batted first but Matthew Prior of Sussex and Middlesex’s Owais Shah were dismissed in quick succession as Vaughan reached the crease with the score on 57 for two.

West India seamer Shawn Gillies was troubling all the batsmen but Vaughan got off the mark with a single from the bowling of Peter Worthington.

Three balls later he hit a delightful off drive for four and he added another boundary, with a leg glance, also off the bowling of Gillies shortly after.

Vaughan compiled four more runs off his next 14 balls but fell attempting a pull shot which produced a catch for mid-on.

After his dismissal the Academy reached 93 for five in the 27th over, Vaughan’s 14 from 32 balls was the best knock of his three with the Academy following a seven-ball duck and 9 from 21 balls.

He also played for England in the two-day tour match against Western Australia, but did not bat.

Tuesday’s match completes the Academy's quota in Australia, with the majority of its players heading home, except those involved in the Commonwealth Bank series against Australia and New Zealand beginning in January.

All-rounder Jamie Dalrymple has already been promoted from the Academy selection to the Ashes squad after Ashley Giles returned home for family reasons.
