In the summer of 2006 it was agreed that the Selectors could name an England Performance Squad (EPS) of up to 30 players. This squad includes the best England qualified players all of whom will fall under the control of the England Team Director. Within this squad there will inevitably be some players on 12-month Central Contracts and England Increment Contracts and some players on County Contracts, and the EPS does not impact on the established process for awarding Central Contracts or have any budgetary consequences.
The EPS is another step of recognition for County players to aim for and helps to integrate new players into the England Team. The introduction of an EPS has not resulted in any significant increase in the resting of players from County Cricket as the size of international squads for Tests and ODIs have remained unchanged.
