England trio up for gong
Three England players are in the running to be named Emerging Player of the Year at the ICC Awards 2006.
The shortlist of four - announced on Sunday - includes Ian Bell, Alastair Cook and Monty Panesar as well as Pakistan pace bowler Mohammad Asif, who recently tested positive for nandrolone.
Ashes-winning captain Michael Vaughan will contest the Captain of the Year award, despite not having played international cricket since last December due to injury.
Australia skipper Ricky Ponting, meanwhile, has been shortlisted in four categories.
The 31-year-old could be named Player of the Year in both forms of the game, as well as overall Player of the Year and Captain of the Year.
In the Test category, Ponting faces competition from Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf as well as the game’s two finest spinners, Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan and Ponting’s Australia colleague Shane Warne.
Ponting, Muralitharan, Yousuf and Mike Hussey are shortlisted for the overall Player of the Year award.
The ODI award will go to one of Hussey, Ponting, Yuvraj Singh or Mahela Jayawardene.
England fast bowler Katherine Brunt has been shortlisted for the women’s Player of the Year award along with Australia’s Karen Rolton and Anjum Chopra of India.
England will compete with India, New Zealand and Sri Lanka for the Spirit of Cricket award.
The awards will be announced on November 3 at an event at the Taj Land's End Hotel in Mumbai.
ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed said: “The past year has been another exciting one for cricket fans around the world and these players have contributed hugely to our enjoyment.
“This is the third annual ICC Awards night and it promises to be a fantastic evening with some very tough decisions to be announced.”
