Giles 'annoyed' to miss out

Ashley Giles is “annoyed” his tour of Pakistan has been brought to a premature end but has set his sights on boarding the plane for the trip to India next spring.

The Warwickshire spinner has been suffering from a hip injury but had been expected to play through the pain barrier in the third Test in Lahore.

However, he was not passed fit for action and will return to England for surgery in the next few days with a view to recovering for the tour of India early next year.

Giles was sidelined by the same injury for the summer Tests against Bangladesh but returned to play an important role in the Ashes triumph over Australia which followed.

“I managed to get through the summer, I hoped I could get through this tour as well but there has been more pain, more problems and it looks like I’ve got to go and get (the operation) done,” he told Sky Sports.

“I’ve got to go under the knife, fix the cartilage and hopefully remove this bone spur as well which might be causing the tears, but it’s quite a long process. It could be up to three months’ recovery so it’s important that I get it done now.

“The quicker we can fit me into theatre the quicker I can start my recovery. Some people are saying it can take up to three months, so it’s cutting it fine for India but by getting it done next week it should make sure I’m on that plane.

“It is a bit annoying at this juncture. I was hoping to have a successful tour of Pakistan but it’s not gone that way. I am disappointed but I am looking forward now to getting it sorted, getting fit and making sure I’m on that plane for India.”

Giles was the star of England’s attack on their last tour of Pakistan in 2000 but has been nothing like as effective this time, taking three wickets at a cost of 246 runs in the first two Tests.

“Conditions are different, the wickets have been very difficult for us normal finger spinners to turn the ball on,” Giles added.

“Injuries have hindered me slightly but I don’t want to put anything down to that. I bowled beautifully the last time I was here, no-one knew me, and I was able to pick up a few wickets.

“Their guys have played well, we’ve got to give credit to Inzamam(-ul-Haq) he’s played beautifully in this series.

“There’s all sorts of things adding up, I’ve got three wickets in two games, so it’s disappointing but I’ve got to move on and find that light at the end of the tunnel.”
