Sussex captain Chris Adams believes Peter Moores will be a “revelation” as England coach.

Moores was appointed as Duncan Fletcher’s successor on Friday, less than 24 hours after the Zimbabwean’s resignation was announced.

Fletcher will take charge of the team for the last time in Saturday’s World Cup meeting with West Indies, and Moores will step into his shoes on May 1.

Adams, who worked under Moores during his time as Sussex coach – they won the County Championship together in 2003 – says the ECB has made the right choice.

“He's a good friend of mine and a fantastic coach - and I believe England cricket is ready for someone to take it to the next level,” said Adams.

“He'd be a revelation. He's very enthusiastic and has a lot of ability in terms of coaching.

"He's a very different person to Duncan Fletcher and has a different style.

"Peter's very hands on, is a terrific one-on-one coach and he sees his main role as making his players excited to play cricket every day.

"The England job is the biggest job in this country and maybe the world - very different to managing a little club on the south coast.

"But he has won a lot of admirers and you can't fail to be impressed by him when you meet him.

"One player has said he has this magic dust which he just throws around which makes players perform. It creates an environment they are happy to be in."

Mark Robinson, Moores’ successor at Sussex, has no doubts his mentor has all the qualities required to succeed at the highest level despite never having played international cricket.

"I don't think a lack of international experience will count against Peter,” said Robinson, whose feat in leading Sussex to a second championship in four seasons last year owed much to the structure created by Moores during his time at Hove.

"There is a captain there (Michael Vaughan) who has won the Ashes, and a lot of very experienced players, and if they are worried about it they could bring in an assistant.

"Peter Moores is a strong character. He has belief in himself and what he stands for.

"He has a love for things that are good in the game and a hatred for things that are bad in the game.

"He has always had a vision. He has a good work-rate and his enthusiasm is infectious.

“I believe it is important for him to have the freedom to create and support people of a similar ethos.”

Robinson also paid tribute to Moores' forward-thinking approach, adding: "Peter has got drive, ambition and vision - he doesn't let things stand still.

"He's always looking to push on and he needs to be backed, given the ability to create a structure which would last.

"We're still reaping the benefits of what he did here."
