Croft keen for Glamorgan representation

Robert Croft admits he is desperate to see Glamorgan produce another England player as soon as possible.

Speaking during the regional launch of the Champions Trophy in Cardiff yesterday, Croft, who brought an end to his distinguished career this year, highlighted the potential impact of the Welsh capital’s involvement in a major global event.

Robert Croft featured in 21 Tests and 50 one-day internationals for England and is keen for a current Glamorgan player to emulate him

The Cardiff Wales Stadium will host four group games and a semi-final next June, with Edgbaston and The Oval staging the other fixtures.

“It’s a massive chance to grow the game in Wales, to bring children along and ignite the passion for the sport,” said Croft.

“If you look at the players who will be in Cardiff next June, it’s an amazing opportunity to see legends of the game. I hope it provides further encouragement to Glamorgan players to go on and play at the top level too.

“In Wales we are desperate for success for the Glamorgan team and to get another player representing that England team."

Glamorgan chief executive Alan Hamer revealed the club will take on one of the eight Champions Trophy participants in a warm-up fixture.

“This will add relevance to the competition with our supporters seeing Glamorgan play an international match for the first time in many a year,” he added.
