England increase lead at Test summit
England have extended their lead at the top of the International Cricket Council Test rankings ahead of the Investec Series against South Africa.
After the annual update took place today, Andrew Strauss’ side have moved six points clear of Australia, who have advanced into second at the expense of the Proteas.
However, despite falling a place, South Africa have the chance to leapfrog England to the summit if they can prevail in the three-Test series.
If Graeme Smith’s outfit win 1-0 or 2-1, they will go level with England on 122 points, but will be ahead when the rankings are calculated to a fraction of a decimal point.
England will retain top spot with a drawn series or a 1-0 victory, while a 2-0 or 3-0 whitewash will see South Africa slip to fourth.
