James Anderson

James Anderson returned to the field after an X-ray on his thumb, which he injured in Lancashire's clash with Notts, showed no break

England seamer James Anderson came through an injury scare with nothing more than bruising to his right thumb after returning to county action at Old Trafford this morning.

Lancashire paceman Anderson joined Nottinghamshire duo Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann in making his first appearance of the season in the match, but his comeback almost turned sour as he was sent to hospital for an X-ray after taking a couple of blows to his bowling hand.

There were concerns the 29-year-old may have suffered a fracture but he got the all-clear after being sent to hospital and returned to bowl in the afternoon session.

A break would have ruled him out of the start of the West Indies Test series later this month, but he should now be clear to get some more match practice under his belt as the game progresses.

Anderson’s first blow came as he parried a Michael Lumb edge to Ashwell Prince at third slip, and he took another, more substantial, when hit while fielding a James Taylor drive off his own bowling.

He did not seem too badly affected, going on to complete a miserly 10-over spell that cost just eight runs, but left the pitch immediately after his final delivery.
