Alastair Cook spoke to ahead of the third Investec Test at Lord's

Alastair Cook is confident England can improve once again in the third and final Investec Test against South Africa at Lord’s.

The hosts know only victory will do at the home of cricket if they are to hang on to top spot in the International Cricket Council Test rankings, a position they have occupied for 12 months.

A below-par England were well beaten in the series-opener, yet responded strongly in a drawn match at Headingley Carnegie that could have gone either way.

Asked if the squad were optimistic of achieving the necessary result at HQ, Cook told “Of course we are. Clearly we didn’t play very well at the Oval, but we bounced back well at Headingley and we just need to continue that momentum.

“I think everyone in the side is pleased with the way we fought back and we need to win this last game.

“It’s going to be five days of tough Test cricket, but hopefully we can put in a good performance.”

England found themselves in a similar position earlier this year, when they needed to beat Sri Lanka to retain their number one ranking.

On that occasion they ran out eight-wicket winners in Colombo.

“We had it in Sri Lanka as well and managed to produce the goods, so hopefully we can draw on that,” Cook added.

“South Africa are a tough side but this is why you play cricket, for these kind of games. We need to come back firing at Lord’s and try and put them under some pressure.”
