South Africa enjoyed useful preparation for next week's final Investec Test by dominating the opening day of their latest tour match against Derbyshire.

AB de Villiers struck a majestic 97 from 96 balls before retiring out and JP Duminy also enjoyed valuable time in the middle with 69 before the tourists declared on 365 for four.

Graeme Smith's declaration gave his bowlers 90 minutes before the close and Vernon Philander picked up the wicket of Matt Lineker as Derbyshire replied with 75 for one from 22 overs.

The only South African to miss out once Derbyshire won the toss was Jacques Rudolph, who was lbw for 15 in the fourth over after he played across a full-length ball from county debutant Ali Evans.

Hashim Amla faced 19 deliveries from Evans without scoring, but changed gear to take 16 off the pace bowler's next five before pulling Matt Higginbotham for six.

AB de Villiers

AB de Villiers dashed to 97 before retiring as South Africa's batsmen prospered on day one of their latest tour match - against Derbyshire

Amla's innings was ended on 42 by a good ball from Ross Whiteley, who moved one away to knock out his off stump, but the batsmen dominated thereafter against a Derbyshire attack featuring only one of the bowlers to have played a part in their rise to the top of LV= County Championship Division Two.

David Wainwright was named in a 14-man team, yet the spinner posed few problems for de Villiers and Duminy, who treated a crowd of 2,337 to some wonderful strokeplay.

De Villiers has yet to make his mark on the Test series but looked in ominous form - even against an inexperienced attack - as he brought up his fifty from 46 balls.

Duminy hit Wainwright for two sixes as he and de Villiers enjoyed themselves in the sunshine and a century for the latter looked a formality until he pulled out after hitting 16 fours and two sixes.

Wainwright took a stinging return catch to remove Duminy, only for Francois du Plessis and Albie Morkel to plunder 123 in 17 overs either side of tea.

Du Plessis reached his fifty by pulling Evans for six and Morkel was on 49 when the declaration came after an over from Mark Footitt that cost 28.

In Derbyshire’s reply Philander went past the bat several times before Lineker got a faint edge into the gloves of wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile.

Wayne Madsen and Usman Khawaja then counter-attacked well and 21 came from Imran Tahir's first three overs as Derbyshire ended day one 290 behind.
