Tim Bresnan and Graham Onions have paid tribute to Andrew Strauss ahead of the England captain’s 100th Test appearance.

Strauss will reach the milestone when he leads England in the third and final Investec Test against South Africa, whose own skipper, Graeme Smith, played his 100th five-day match earlier in the series.

Fittingly, the Middlesex opener will follow in Smith’s footsteps at Lord’s – not only his county’s ground, but the home of cricket.

“It’s quite apt that it’s here,” Bresnan told "It’s a very special occasion, playing your 100th Test match. I can only begin to think what his emotions are going to be walking out.

“He’s been massive, hasn’t he? Captain Fantastic. He’s been instrumental in our rise to the top – himself, Andy Flower and the backroom staff as well; they’ve got us pulling in the same direction and working us a team.”

Bresnan’s comments were echoed by fellow seamer Onions, who believes the team have been given an additional incentive to perform strongly – not that one is needed with their number one’s Test status on the line.

“When you make your debut it’s a special moment and this will probably be even more special,” said Onions of Strauss’ achievement.

“A hundred Tests – people can only dream of that really. He’s our leader; he’s our captain; he’s inspirational as a leader and he deserves to be on the winning side in his 100th Test.

“We’re completely dedicated to doing as well as we can, starting on Thursday, and I’m sure things will go well.”

This week’s game will also see Strauss bring up his half-century of Test outings as captain and an England victory would give him a 50% win ratio at the helm.
