Investec Test Series

Keep up to date with England's Investec Test Series against West Indies with our in-depth day-by-day reports - plus all the reaction, highlights and photos

Play is abandoned at Edgbaston without a ball being bowled on day one

Persistent rain prevented any play on day one of the third and final Investec Test between England and West Indies at Edgbaston.

A bleak day in Birmingham ensured the captains were unable to even make it out into the middle for the toss and, after the showers became heavier in the afternoon, umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Tony Hill confirmed the inevitable washout at 3:30pm.

Edgbaston was the venue the last time a full day of Test cricket was lost in England, during the 2009 Ashes.

England, who hold an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, were boosted this morning when Matt Prior was passed fit following an eye infection. Steven Davies, who had been called up as cover yesterday afternoon, therefore returned to LV= County Championship action with Surrey.

Live Text Commentary

3:30pm - That’s all folks! The weather has won and we won’t be seeing any play today. Join us again tomorrow to see if we can finally get a game started.

3:10pm - I am reliably informed that Edgbaston was the venue the last time a day of Test cricket was completely washed out in England. That happened three years ago, during the 2009 Ashes. I imagine it may not be long before we get confirmation that there will be no play today. It is hosing it down out there.

Edgbaston

2:10pm - There are more puddles on the ground than ever before, despite the best efforts of the blotter machines. Still a decent number of hardy spectators in the stands, but they must be fearing the worst.

1:40pm - It has now been raining steadily for quite some time and a total washout appears increasingly likely. There has been play in the LV= County Championship, however, so why not take a look at our lunchtime round-up of all the action.

1:15pm - Our early lunch has passed, but there is still no immediate prospect of play unfortunately.

12:10pm - It has just been confirmed that lunch will be taken early at 12:30pm. No great surprise there.

11:52am - Oh dear - the aforementioned covers have returned and the skies have darkened again. As you were...

11:38am - Pleased to report that some of the covers have been removed here and it is as bright as it has been all day. That does not say a great deal, however.

10:52am - Not much more that I can tell you at the moment. The covers remain on, the skies remain grey and the prospects of play in the near future are slim. We'll be sure to update you as soon as there is any news on a possible start.

10:35am - We should have had the captains out in the middle by now for the toss, but there is no news as yet on when that will take place. It's damp and miserable out there, although the drizzle appears to have eased once again, for the time being at least.

Matt Prior

10:25am - Any hopes of a prompt start have been hit by the return of precipitation. Could be a frustrating day for all concerned I’m afraid.

10:20am - With James Anderson absent this week, at least one of Steven Finn or Graham Onions is set to be handed a chance to impress. If forecasts are to be believed, however, England may wish to send for Tom Daley...

10:07am - In somewhat less positive news, the skies are looking increasingly gloomy. The toss is scheduled for 10:30am, but I would not be surprised if that is put back.

9:50am - As the groundstaff here beaver away in an attempt to clear away the patches of standing water, I have positive news from the England camp. Wicketkeeper-batsman Matt Prior has been passed fit after recovering from an eye infection. As a result, Steven Davies, who travelled up to join the squad as cover last night, has been allowed to rejoin the Surrey squad for their LV= County Championship fixture against Sussex at Horsham.

9:45am - Good morning from Edgbaston and welcome to ecb.co.uk’s live coverage of the third and final Investec Test between England and West Indies. Andrew Strauss’ men are 2-0 up in the series, but may well be hampered by rain over the next five days as they go in search of a third straight win. I’m pleased to report the showers have cleared for the time being, although the outfield is a touch on the soggy side. Not sure we’ll be starting on time at 11am, but let’s see.
