Finn and Tremlett on the up
England bowlers Steven Finn and Chris Tremlett have achieved career-high positions in the Reliance ICC Test bowling rankings following their performances in the second npower Test against Sri Lanka at Lord’s.
Finn, who returned match figures of 4-139, has moved up to 15th, while Tremlett has climbed four places to 24th after claiming three wickets in the match.
The two pacemen are still in the qualification period, as a bowler only qualifies for a full rating when he reaches 100 Test wickets.
Sri Lanka left-armer Rangana Herath is now his country’s highest-ranked bowler, with his five scalps at Lord’s lifting him five places to 19th, one above fellow countryman Ajantha Mendis.
Meanwhile, England opener Alastair Cook has closed the gap on fourth-placed Kumar Sangakkara in the batting rankings to just one rating point.
Cook continued his wonderful run of form with scores of 96 and 106 and now boasts a career-high rating of 826. Sachin Tendulkar and Jacques Kallis lead the way on 883 points, with England’s Jonathan Trott 40 points adrift in third.
Ian Bell has also taken his rating to new heights. The Warwickshire batsman is in 17th position on 712 following his two half-centuries this week.
England can no longer overhaul South Africa in the ICC Test Championship, regardless of the result in the third Test at the Rose Bowl. Only a 3-0 series win would have been enough to lift Andrew Strauss' side into second place.
