No Trescothick for India tour match
Somerset captain Marcus Trescothick will not renew his opening partnership with Andrew Strauss this week after being rested from the tour match against India at Taunton, which starts on Friday.
When it emerged that England skipper Strauss was to be loaned from Middlesex on a one-match basis ahead of the forthcoming npower Test series, it raised the tantalising prospect of the pair, who opened together in the victorious 2005 Ashes campaign, lining up together once again.
But with Trescothick key to his county’s prospects in all three formats, Somerset have taken the opportunity to remove him from the firing line.
Director of cricket Brian Rose said: "It is a long and taxing season for Marcus as a captain chasing success in three competitions and the fixture list offers few chances for him to take a break.
"We want him fit physically and mentally for some big games ahead and we feel it right to inform our supporters in advance that he will not be playing against India.
"While there will be disappointment over this, there is the added interest of his replacement as opener being the England captain Andrew Strauss, who is guesting for us in the tour match.
"We will select our team on Thursday and it will be a strong one for what promises to be three days of hugely entertaining cricket."
