Former England and Surrey bowler Robin Jackman has undergone surgery on two malignant tumours on his vocal chords.

Jackman, 67, played four Tests and 15 one-day internationals before going on to become a successful television commentator.

His primary employer, South African broadcaster Supersport, today released a statement on his recovery.

Robin Jackman, pictured here at the Kia Oval in July, said: “It’s not the prettiest, but I got it early and I’m confident I’ll be fine.”

It read: “Celebrated SuperSport commentator Robin Jackman, 67, is to undergo seven weeks of daily radiotherapy following two operations to remove malignant tumours from his vocal cord.

“This treatment will be followed by four weeks’ rest as his voice recovers and he expects to be back on the air in the new year.”

Jackman added: “It’s not the prettiest, but I got it early and I’m confident I’ll be fine.”

Surrey chief executive Richard Gould added: "Robin is a true legend of Surrey County Cricket Club and the game of cricket. We send him all our thoughts and best wishes at this time."
