John Buchanan, who masterminded an Ashes whitewash in 2006/07, will advise England ahead of this winter's contest

Former Australia coach John Buchanan will fly to England this week to assist Andy Flower and his team with their preparations for the Ashes, it was confirmed this morning.

Buchanan helped Australia win three out of four Ashes series, including the 5-0 whitewash in 2006/07, and also coached his country during two successful World Cup campaigns.

The 57-year-old, who left his job as Australia coach following the 2007 World Cup triumph, helped England in a consultancy capacity last summer.

Buchanan will add to the Australian input already available to England, following the appointment earlier this year of David Saker as fast bowling coach.

Their charges will travel down under in November with hopes high, after last summer’s 2-1 victory over Australia, that they can win the Ashes away for the first time in almost a quarter of a century.

An ECB spokesman said: “I can confirm that he is coming here this week.”
