England became the top-ranked Test team for the first time in August and also lead the newly-formed Twenty20 standings

England's cricket team heads the list of British nominations for the 2012 Laureus World Sports Awards.

Andrew Strauss' Test side, who won the Ashes Down Under and climbed to the top of the Test rankings this year, have been included in the world team of the year category.

The Twenty20 team, who won the World T20 last year, also sit top of the new standings for the international game’s shortest form.

England face strong competition from Rugby World Cup winners New Zealand, Formula One team Red Bull and Champions League holders Barcelona.

The awards ceremony, which recognises sporting achievement during 2011, will be held at London's Central Hall, Westminster, on February 6.

Laureus world sports academy chairman Edwin Moses said: “This has been a great year for sport and the academy are going to find it extremely difficult to decide who to vote for as winners.

“We have had several massive performances in 2011 both by individuals and teams and that has been reflected in the nominations.”
