A report claims holding major matches at Lord's boosts the local economy by £30million

Staging a Test at Lord’s generates more than £10million for the local economy, according to MCC.

MCC has published a report - produced by London Economics and based on a survey of fans - outlining the impace of holding matches at the game’s headquarter’s.

The figures reveal all major matches at Lord’s boost the local economy by as much as £30m a year, and the London economy as a whole by a further £29m.

The conclusions are drawn from a survey of almost 3,000 fans at the England-West Indies Test at Lord’s in May - the biggest expenditure survey at a major match in Britain.

The 50-page report shows that this Test's local economic impact was between £9.5m-10.8m, supporting the equivalent of 133-151 full-time jobs.

London Economics calculated that the annual local economic impact of the major matches at Lord's is £26.6m-30.2m.

Their estimate for the London-wide economic impact is similarly large - between £25m-29.5m each year.

The team from London Economics - led by Dr Gavan Conlon - claim that a 5,000 increase in capacity at Lord’s would boost the annual economic impact by between £3m-3.8m.

MCC secretary and chief executive Keith Bradshaw said: “It (the report) will prove invaluable over the months ahead as we consult our members on the development of a masterplan for the future of Lord's - when capacity issues will be high on everyone's agenda.

“I'm sure the report will also be widely read by our local stakeholders, who already know that we're keen to increase our capacity and to keep our current share of major matches - including two Tests per year.

“It's right for the players and, as this report shows, right for the local economy as well.”
