Yorkshire director of cricket Martyn Moxon says he believes “there is still a lot of cricket left” in Michael Vaughan following the batsman’s decision to quit the England captaincy.
Moxon confirmed he had received a text message from Vaughan before his resignation as England captain had been announced.
“I feel very disappointed for him, it must have been a very difficult decision for him to make,” Moxon said.
“You don’t give up the England captaincy lightly but I am sure that in his mind it was the right thing for him to do.
“Hopefully, he will come back refreshed after taking time out and I am sure there is still a lot of cricket left in him.
“He looked in good touch when he was with us but he got out early in a couple of Tests and it is just a matter of him spending time in the middle and hopefully he will be able to do that with us and get back on track.
“I don’t by any means think that it is the end of his career. It seems he wants to go on playing but I have not yet spoken to him.
“Michael Vaughan is a quality player and you don’t become a bad player overnight. It will be great if he can come back and score runs for us.”
Yorkshire captain Darren Gough, who will welcome Vaughan back for his side’s battle to remain in LV County Championship Division One, was surprised he decided to step down.
“I am very disappointed for Michael Vaughan and for England because I thought he was an excellent captain and leader,” Gough said.
“I said on my radio show last week that I thought he should stay on as England captain.
“He is a terrific player and, like Collingwood, is probably only one innings away from resurrecting his form.
“The timing is never right when to resign but it tends to be when you have lost a series. He was well respected by the players."
