Broad taps into Gough

NatWest Series

Stuart Broad will mark his first senior call-up into an England squad by seeking out recalled veteran Darren Gough to try and pick his brains.

The 20-year-old Leicestershire fast bowler capped an impressive domestic season by being included in the 16-man squad for the one-day series against Pakistan.

Standing at 6ft 7ins and still growing and able to bowl with great hostility, the son of former England opener Chris has all the attributes to have a long international career.

But his first priority when he meets up with the England squad is to seek out Gough - recalled after a year’s absence from the international scene - and try and utilise his vast experience.

“Playing alongside Goughie will be a great experience,” admitted Broad. “He has been performing at the top all his career and it will be great to talk to him.

“Every young kid dreams of playing for their country, and having a father who achieved that ambition certainly made me dream of it more than most.

“It’s astonishing how far I have come in the last 18 months, but I am confident that I can now make the step up to international level.”

Having impressed the selectors all season with his form at county level, Broad now has the opportunity to possibly earn a place on this winter’s Ashes tour if he performs well during the one-day series.

But Broad is refusing to look too far ahead and is instead concentrating on enjoying his first England experience, which may begin with Monday’s NatWest Twenty20 international at Bristol.

“Both my father and the coaches I have worked with in recent years have encouraged me to express myself and enjoy it,” he said.

“So if I am selected to play for England, I will endeavour to treat it as any other game that I play for Leicestershire.

“I’m delighted to have won this call-up, but I know that I have still got a lot of learning and developing to do.

“But I am still growing and still looking to develop physically so that I can add more pace.

“To perform at the highest level, I need to be up around the 90mph mark and so I still have work to do.”

Broad is not the only uncapped player to have made the squad with the selectors calling up Sussex’s Michael Yardy, who has worked hard in the last year to develop his left-arm spin, to provide competition for Middlesex’s James Dalrymple.

“In the absence of Ashley Giles and Ian Blackwell, who are both injured, we’re keen to look at Michael Yardy as an option with both the bat and the ball,” explained chairman of selectors Graveney.

“In light of the series defeat to Sri Lanka both the captain, Andrew Strauss and the selectors are keen to put in a far better performance against Pakistan, who will prove to be a very difficult opponent.

“The selectors see this series as another opportunity to look at the options available as we draw closer to the World Cup next year.”
