Tasmania assistant coach Allister de Winter has been appointed Australia’s bowling coach for the tour of England and Ireland.

The 44-year-old former Tasmania fast bowler will have the chance to display his credentials for the vacant post as Australia play five one-day internationals against England during the NatWest Series, which is preceded by an ODI with Ireland.

A final decision on the successor to Craig McDermott, who stood down last month, will be made when candidates are interviewed upon Australia’s return from the trip.

De Winter combines his Tasmania duties with the post of head coach for Big Bash League outfit Hobart Hurricanes. He has previous experience of the Australia set-up, having been part of the coaching staff for the 2009 tour of South Africa due to his position in Cricket Australia’s coaching development programme.

He has also worked closely with Ben Hilfenhaus at Tasmania, helping to rebuild the experienced seamer’s action in the last year. The result of encouraging his charge to vary his angles of approach to the crease and persevere with a fuller length was a recall to the Australia side and a return of 37 wickets at 18.18 in the series against India and West Indies.

Hilfenhaus is again set to be a key pillar of a seam department that can call upon the similarly seasoned Peter Siddle and Ryan Harris, while also boasting exciting young talents in the form of Pat Cummins, James Pattinson and Mitchell Starc.
